This book traces the geological and railroad history of the Pacific Northwest with intricate detail, expert understanding, and amusing anecdotes. This is the story of two railroads racing up the Deschutes River to expand railroad service from the Columbia River to Bend, Oregon. The race was a competition between two railroad barons James J. Hill of the Great Northern and Edward H. Harriman of the Union Pacific. At the heart of this gripping story is the essence of the American West and the magnates, workers, immigrants, and settlers whose impact on the region would usher in the age of railroad transportation in the twentieth century.

This book was filled with things I did not know other than the details of the struggle between Harriman and Hill. I learned more about geology (I knew very little), railroads (I had just finished reading a book on american rail history and a second about american rail operations. I was surprised by what I hadn't gotten in the first two admirable books.) and more about the lives of Harriman (the father of Harriman Brothers founder and the most important of the Southern Pacific founders). I have a single beef. The price of all the assorted information is that covering the actual subject in the title is deferred nearly halfway through the book. If you are a fan of American railroads or American history I expect you will find the value of the book surprising and the coverage of the main event more than adequate.Product details

The Deschutes River Railroad War eBook Leon Speroff Reviews
Delivered quickly and just as described.
Covers the background geography of the Deschutes River Canyon and the history of two rival railroad tycoons building thrugh solid lava rock and the final resolution by Washington DC. It doesn't have the minute details but why argue? It's a great book and a great story.
I must compliment the swift attention from this seller as I received my purchase next day,via USPS. (Being quite knowledgable on the transport options the United States Postal Service IS ALWAYS the most inexpensive, repectful delivery and most expedious!)
"The Deschutes River Railroad War" is in-depth and quite complete work, a little more favorable to the "Jim Hill" side than I would have preferred, but I'm a little "Union Pacific" sided, so I guess we equalled each other out, LOL.
Central Oregon must have book. Very interesting history.
The first two chapters covers the geology of the area, and add an interesting touch to the book. The rest of the book deals with the building of the two railroads the area and the determination of both E. H. Harriman and James J. Hill to be the dominant force in that area.
I wasn't aware there been a Deschutes River railroad war and wanted to learn more about it. I did but the author seemed to take a long route to the main topic. He spent a lot of time in the beginning of the book on different background topics but didn't tie the information to the main subject until late in the book. I still recommend it to others.
The photos aren't as spectacular on a regular kindle as they are in the original hardcover book, but the information is all there. This is probably the definitive book on the Deschutes Railroad War, and a guide to the historic remains to be seen today.
Two railroads fought for the access to the customers and products of Central Oregon and points south, but ultimately came to an agreement and joined into one line from Madras south. The stretch of trackage built via Gateway remains in service today, with BNSF owning the rights to it. The track built around through Willow Creek Canyon was abandoned, and today part of it is a trail, part is abandoned.
